WESTERN CIVILIZATION Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

WESTERN CIVILIZATION - Essay Example The peasants were made to pay land tax, war tax, and an extraordinary number of dues were imposed on them such as, cloth dues, salt dues, bread dues, while the clergy and the nobility were exempt from paying taxes. Resentment and anger were fuming among the exploited poor peasants. These form the long time social background, which caused French Revolution. The administrative failure in France and her bankruptcy in the later part of the 18th century forced Louis XVI to call a general meeting of the Estates General. But differences ensued among the representatives regarding voting rights. On June 10, 1789 the Third Estate, consisting of the bourgeoisie, the peasants, and the liberal minded representatives from the members of the nobility declared itself the National Assembly. Louis XVI failed to disband the group. On July 14th commoners in Paris stormed the Bastille. French Revolution brought new hope and light to all other European states. As the age-old feudal system was demolished the new age upheld the high ideals of Enlightenment. New institutions came up which were based on reason and justice. Man broke the shackles of superstition, prejudice, oppression and cruelty of a fellow human being. New terms such as freedom, liberty, equality and brotherhood filled the hearts of men. Henri Matisse:Goldfish :: essays research papers

Henri Matisse: Goldfish Henri Emoile Matisse, born in 1869, is regarded as one of the â€Å"great formative figures in 20th-century art†, as well as the leader of the Fauve group. Fauvism is defined as â€Å"an early-20th-century movement in painting begun by a group of French artists and marked by the use of bold, often distorted forms and vivid colors.† Matisse was associated with this group due to his use of vivid colors, as well as his unusual style of presenting objects. Many critics at this time called him, as well as other artists with similar styles, â€Å"a disgrace for art and therefore called them 'The Fauves'. The Fauves means 'Wild Beasts', a name that the artists of the group accepted with pride.† The main goals of the artists in this movement were to break away from the rigid Impressionist movement, and begin using bolder colors, as well as their own interpretations of shapes. The work of Matisse is based on the principals and possibilities of 'leaving out'. The human min d can fill in what is missing in the painting, like dimension, details and plastical forms. The Fauves expressed their feelings of joy for life and joy for art and painting. Fauvism paved the way for future styles of art, and was considered radical in the early 20th century. Henri Emoile Matisse was born in Le Cateau in northern France on December 31, 1869. The son of a middle class family, his first career was in the law field. However, an appendicitis attack in 1890 rendered him bedridden, and with much time on his hands, he began to study the art of painting. To help alleviate his boredom, his mother bought him a paint box, and thus began his new passion: painting. In 1893, the work of Matisse was noticed by Gustav Moreau, (1826-1898) French painter, who developed a distinctive style in the Symbolist mode. Matisse displayed his work for the first time in 1896 at the ‘Salon de la Societe Nationale’. In 1903, Matisse was exposed to the pointillist paintings of Henri Edmond Cross and Paul Signac. Pointillism was a late 19th-century method of painting, consisting of depositing small dots or strokes of pure color on the canvas. Seen from a distance, these â€Å"points† blend and give the effect of a different color and heightened lumino sity. The style, a development of impressionist color theories, was originated by the French painters Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.

Compare and Contrast Economic, Social, and Political...

Compare and contrast economic, social, and political developments in the North and South between 1800-1860. How do you account for the divergence between the two sections? During 1880 to 1860, The United States of America went through social, political and economic changes, which affected the North and South in different ways. The economy of the South depended primarily on slaves. Its settlers had plantations of cotton, which was very profitable at that time, but they needed a cheap labour force to work their lands (slaves). Living in the South meant either having a lot of money to invest on lands (for crop plantations) or working in the only available jobs, which were done by slaves. However, the North needed routes and transports for they were many and the kind of jobs available there were different and versified. The fact that the North was more urbanized and industrialized, and the South more rural, also meant that the way of life was rather different. People in the North lived in cities or towns, which had recreational spaces. Different urban sports were done in the North, which were not common in the South for slaves were not given free time. Women were treated differently than men in each region. In the South, slaves had the same demands regarding their work and the same hours (from sun to sun, that is long hours and large work), no matter their sex. However, in the North, women had less demanding jobs and also worked less hours than men. During this time, both regions wanted to enlarge their lands, though they had different motivations. The South wanted to expand fast and take slaves with them for the growth of cotton since it was profitable. What Is Brass Composition and Properties

Brass is an alloy made primarily of copper and zinc. The proportions of the copper and zinc are varied to yield many different kinds of brass. Basic modern brass is 67% copper and 33% zinc. However, the amount of copper may range from 55% to 95% by weight, with the amount of zinc varying from 5% to 40%. Lead is commonly  added to brass at a concentration of around 2%. The lead addition improves the machinability of brass. However, significant lead leaching often occurs, even in brass that contains a relatively low overall concentration of lead. Uses of brass include musical instruments, firearm cartridge casing, radiators, architectural trim, pipes and tubing, screws, and decorative items. Brass Properties Brass often has a bright gold appearance, however, it can also be reddish-gold  or silvery-white. A higher percentage of copper yields a rosy tone, while more zinc makes the alloy appear silver.Brass has higher malleability than either bronze or zinc.Brass has desirable acoustic properties appropriate for use in musical instruments. The metal exhibits low friction.Brass is a soft metal that may be used in cases when a  low chance of sparking is necessary. The alloy has a relatively low melting point. Its a good conductor of heat.Brass resists corrosion, including galvanic corrosion from saltwater.Brass is easy to cast.Brass is not ferromagnetic. Among other things, this makes it easier to separate from other metals for recycling. Brass vs. Bronze Brass and bronze may appear similar, yet they are two distinct alloys. Heres a comparison between them: Brass Bronze Composition Alloy of copper and zinc. Commonly contains lead. May include iron, manganese, aluminum, silicon, or other elements. Alloy of copper, usually with tin, but sometimes other elements, including manganese, phosphorus, silicon, and aluminum. Color Golden yellow, reddish gold, or silver. Usually reddish brown and not as bright as brass. Properties More malleable than copper or zinc. Not as hard as steel. Corrosion resistant. Exposure to ammonia may produce stress cracking. Low melting point. Better conductor of heat and electricity than many steels. Corrosion resistant. Brittle, hard, resists fatigue. Usually a slightly higher melting point than brass. Uses Musical instruments, plumbing, decoration, low-friction applications (e.g., valves, locks), tools and fittings used around explosives. Bronze sculpture, bells and cymbals, mirrors and reflectors, ship fittings, submerged parts, springs, electrical connectors. History Brass dates back to around 500 B.C.E. Bronze is an older alloy, dating back to about 3500 B.C.E. Identifying Brass Composition by Name Common names for brass alloys may be misleading, so the Unified Numbering System for metals and alloys is the best way to know the composition of the metal and predict its applications. The letter C indicates brass is a copper alloy. The letter is followed by five digits. Wrought brasses — which are suitable for mechanical forming — begin with 1 through 7. Cast brasses, which may be formed from molded molten metal, are indicated using an 8 or 9.

Different Types Of Traits That Define Personality

There are many people who live in Chicago that I haven’t met yet. I see many of them on my way to school or on my way to work. Every day I pass by them on the train or just crossing the street. Each one of those people that I do come across have their own experiences in life and most of all they all have their own personality traits. The many different sets of personality traits are what defines who you are. When you want to describe someone, you describe them based on their personality. There are many different types of traits that define personality. The three I believe that most define me are extraversion, openness to experience and high need for affiliation. According to Hogan (2012) â€Å"The Big Five Theory has five basic dimensions that explain individual differences in personality. The five dimensions in the big five personality theory include extraversion, openness to experience, neuroticism, agreeableness, and conscientiousness†. From these five dimensions of personality, I believe there are two traits that best define who I am. Those two traits are extraversion and openness to experience. The term extraversion is described as someone who is socially adaptive, outspoken, assertive, bold and energetic. Someone who is an extrovert is more likely to be sociable and talkative.
